Bocas del Toro

## The spot Bocas del Toro is a Caribbean archipelago off Panama's coast with several reef breaks on the outer islands. Paunch and Dumpers are the main spots, breaking over shallow coral reef. The Caribbean swells are inconsistent but when they arrive, the warm water and reef produce quality hollow waves. The jungle-backed island setting is spectacular. ## When it works Needs north or north-east Caribbean swell, primarily from winter storms (November-March). A southerly wind is offshore. Best at mid to high tide. The 3-6ft range produces the best waves. The dry season (January-March) offers cleaner conditions. Consistency is the challenge; flat spells are common. ## Where to sit Paunch: a defined reef with left and right options. Dumpers: heavier, hollower, and more critical. Each breaks over shallow coral. Boat access to the outer reef breaks. ## Hazards Very shallow coral reef. Fire coral and urchins. Getting caught inside over the reef is painful. The reef is sharp and unforgiving. Booties recommended. Boat access means you need reliable transport back. ## Parking and access Boat from Bocas Town to the outer breaks (water taxi or hired boat). No car access. The town has full tourist facilities. ## The crowd Small. The inconsistency and reef difficulty limit numbers. On good days 5-15 people at each break. A relaxed Caribbean atmosphere. ## Local tips Bocas is a chance destination for surf; come for the islands and surf when the swell arrives. The nightlife in Bocas Town is lively. If it is flat, snorkelling, diving, and island hopping fill the days. The local food blends Caribbean, Panamanian, and indigenous flavours.
