Spot guide

This guide was generated from conditions data. Know this spot? Submit your own tips below.

## The spot Arrifana is a sheltered bay with a beach break and right-hand point/reef on Portugal's Costa Vicentina (west Algarve). The bay faces west-northwest and the headland provides shelter from northerly winds and bigger swells. The right-hander off the rocks at the north end is the premium wave when working. The beach break inside the bay is gentler and suits beginners. A beautiful, cliff-enclosed setting. ## When it works Needs westerly or north-westerly swell. The bay's shelter means it needs moderate swell to produce good waves inside. An easterly wind is offshore. Best at mid to high tide for the reef/point right. Works year-round. The 3-6ft range is ideal. The right-hander needs more swell than the beach break. ## Where to sit The right-hander breaks off rocks at the north end of the bay (intermediate to advanced). The beach break in the centre is gentler (all levels). Choose based on ability. The right needs precise positioning over the reef. ## Hazards Rocky reef at the right-hander. Urchins on the rocks. The point section has consequence on bigger days. The beach break is very safe with sandy bottom. Steep cliff path for access. ## Parking and access Pay car park at the cliff top. Steep path down to the beach (5-10 minutes). Seasonal restaurant at the cliff top with views. The drive through the Natural Park is pleasant. ## The crowd Moderate. Surf schools use the beach break. The right-hander attracts a smaller, more experienced crew. On good days expect 15-20 people across both sections. The setting and quality attract visitors from across the Algarve. ## Local tips Arrifana's right-hander is one of the best waves on the west Algarve when it works. It needs a decent swell and mid-high tide. Booties recommended for the rocky entry at the point. If Arrifana is too small, Amado (10 minutes south) is more exposed. The cliff-top restaurant does excellent seafood with a sunset view.

Frequently asked questions

How often is this page updated?

Current conditions refresh every 3 hours when the cron runs. Hourly data updates every 30 minutes. The 7-day forecast, luck factor, and packing notes are all pre-computed at the same time.

What is the luck factor?

We compare the 7-day forecast to the last 5 years of marine data for the same week at Arrifana. The delta tells you whether conditions are shaping up better, worse, or about the same as a typical late May.

How is 'best session' picked?

We score each day of the 7-day forecast using the same algorithm as the leaderboard, and highlight the highest scorer.

Where does the data come from?

Open-Meteo's Marine API (swell height, period, water temperature) and Weather API (wind and conditions).

Does the score capture local knowledge?

Honestly, no. Every break has tide windows, swell directions and reef contours that a global model cannot see. Treat the score as a starting point, then check a local cam.
